This Semester Should Be Interesting

January 31, 2009 · 1 Comment

I signed up for one class because I was hoping that I would be able to find another job before the semester finished.  My college has this handy new tool where you can see the books that are required for the classes for the coming semester.  I bought the books and figured that since I had all this free time on my hands after being laid off from my job, I figured that I would read all the books before the semester even started.  The books weren’t too bad, so I figured that the class would be interesting.  Boy was I wrong.  I’m sure that the professor is very smart but listening to her talk was torture.  Every other word was either “um” or “you know”.  I couldn’t even follow what she was saying because the constant “ums” and “you knows” were so distracting.  It was almost as if she was completely unprepared for class and decided just to wing it.

Things like this are one of my pet peeves.  Teaching is truly an art.  It isn’t something that you can just show up for and hope no one notices your mistakes.  It’s even more offensive that the students are paying to be taught by someone who clearly isn’t a teacher.

I notice that more colleges are requiring some sort of public speaking course to be taken by every student, regardless of major.  I think that this is so important.  No matter what career path you choose to follow after you graduate, being able to clearly communicate your thoughts is vital to being successful.
